One of the questions I’ve been asked more frequently than any other since the last issue of the Door Industry Journal is how Alutech manage to get their ‘U’ value to be so much lower than the competitors - says Steve Hudson MD of JD (UK) speaking on behalf of Alutech. Is it tested in the same way as the competition, what size of door was the test done on, was it tested in house or by an independent test house etc. The answer is that full door was tested in the Rosenheim institute in Germany, to the relevant EN standard and achieved the enviable ‘U’ value of 1.0. Putting this into perspective, most other manufacturers achieve a value, tested using a similar method, of 1.35 to 1.48 making the Alutech door 30-40% better insulated. It’s not just the insulation value of the panel; it’s the entire insulation of the door that makes a well-insulated door. So Alutech’s twin side and top seals along with the heavy duty bottom rubber make a huge contribution. One of the main factors is that Alutech’s frame profile is flush with the opening, whereas some other manufacturer’s frames return into the opening by 20mm - this causes a huge cold bridge which detracts from the insulation value.
