Barclays Bank on Bene’t Street in central Cambridge was acquired by property developers, Wrenbridge, who were looking to convert the site to a ‘mixed-use’ premises. Deciding to rejuvenate the site to become two restaurant outlets on the ground floor, and student living accommodation on the upper floors, the company appointed Freeland Rees Roberts Architects to develop the building. Always pleased to get involved with refurbishing properties of cultural importance, B J Waller was delighted to be asked by Freeland Rees Roberts to be the architectural ironmongers for the student accommodation project. Also working with contractors ISG Jackson, it was a pleasure to work with some of the finest construction companies in the local area. Required to supply hardwearing, reliable and safety-conscious hardware appropriate for student living, B J Waller had to consider all aspects of the accommodation, and employ a wide range of items, to fulfil the brief. Supplying products such as Dorma Slide Channel TS92 Door Closers, Automatic Bi-Parting Door Gear, Panic Hardware and Washroom fittings, the longevity of the products specified was of utmost importance. Having previously worked on other prestigious educational developments, including Westminster College, the King’s School Ely and Hampton College, B J Waller could take into account the need for safety features that are key for students living in University accommodation.
