Is faster assembly of galvanised shutters feasible? – Here’s a short case study that proves it can be done if you choose the right product. SGG one of the best know trade suppliers of galvanised shutters in the South of England have discovered a faster and simpler method of manufacturing manual and motor barrel assemblies for their unique shutter system. Daniel Tilly, workshop supervisor comments: “I’ve been making shutters in the same way for most of my life, the same way the majority of the trade assemble them by using a 4” steel barrel, welded riv nuts, welded dummy end, then paint the barrel to stop it going rusty before installation, the whole process could take 30-40 minutes”. “Last year a rep from JD UK came to see me, claiming he had a revolutionary new barrel assembly that would save me up to 70% of my manufacturing time, and could be carried out with a less skilled labour force, as well as being easier to install. I laughed at him and added in my opinion if it’s too good to be true it usually is”. “Under sufferance and with a little cajoling from my boss who could see the potential cost savings, I tried it and to my surprise, it did exactly what it said on the tin, or barrel to pardon the pun. The barrel is galvanised, so no painting, the top lath simply bolts down to an adjustable slide which moves to any point along the barrel, so no welding… My manufacturing was now cut to about 10 minutes!”. “I usually take anything a ‘rep’ says with a pinch of salt, but this one saved me a load of time and hassle, so now the boss is happy as he can make more shutters with the same amount of people, so I’m just waiting for my productivity pay rise now, result!!”. Steve Hudson from JD UK Ltd who are the distributors of the Deprat product in the UK, couldn’t comment on the ‘reps’ skills, but emphasised that SGG are one of a growing number of companies that are trying the Deprat barrel system for their galvanised shutter manufacturing. Below is an image to better explain the difference between a traditional 4” steel barrel and the 89mm Deprat assembly. If you would like to buy readymade galvanised shutters using the Deprat barrel, please contact Paul at SGG on 0208 640 9989 or if you are a manufacturer and would like to buy the barrel directly please call Louis at JD (UK) on 01924 472 924.
