Any electrical equipment used where combustible fumes, vapour and/or dust are present must conform to the ATEX equipment directive by having no sources of ignition. And it’s the door supplier’s responsibility to make sure it does. But deciding what equipment to use in hazardous areas, can itself be a hazardous process. GfA UK have the advice and products to help you make the right call and stay safe and legal. GfA has one of the most comprehensive ranges of ATEX equipment you’ll find – from direct drives, sectional drives and chain drives, to accessories including ATEX-certified safety brakes and smoke and heat detectors. The products are ATEX-certified by Europe’s top testing houses. So, you can be confident they comply to the letter of the law, with assessment of the complete unit, not just the individual components. Both Robert Booth and Peter Reid at GfA UK hold CSA Group certification in Hazardous Area Basic Principles so are qualified to help you understand the levels of risk, and to select the correct ATEX drive and controls. They can also advise on the right questions to ask your customers about how areas will be used. Peter explains: “We often get enquiries where people don’t realise they need ATEX. Our team are trained to ask the right questions, to find out about the environment and pass the customer on to Robert or myself if hazardous materials are suspected. Customers can help themselves by asking the end user for their ATEX risk assessment and looking for other indicators in the location such as ATEX electrical outlets.” If your customer has hazardous materials on site, please call the GfA sales team on 01926 452452. They’ll give you qualified advice on the right drives and controls to suit your needs.
