Door Industry Journal - Spring 2019
THE door industry journal spring 2019 Also online at: www.dijonline.co.uk Secured by Design Welcome to my first column in Door Industry Journal – and my thanks to this esteemed publication for this opportunity. Looking through the pages of the winter issue I was struck by how many companies and individuals I have come to know over the years since Secured by Design (SBD) was launched 30 years ago – yes, it’s our 30th anniversary this year! Whilst door and window manufacturing, the construction industry and the overall built environment have changed enormously, one key factor that holds everything together has remained unchanged: the importance of partnership working. We have acted as a catalyst to work with the construction industry to incorporate security in a wide range of building sectors, such as residential, education, health, transport and commercial. In doing so, a side industry of test houses and certification bodies has been set up to meet the growing requirements for products that are robust and secure. We instigated the formation of the UK Test House Studies Group and Certification Bodies Group for door, window and lock products and have chaired these groups for almost 20 years with the sole aim being to ensure there is parity between test and certification bodies. In addition, there is a Building regulation for security in England, now replicated in Wales, and Scotland too. The role of 200 plus Designing Out Crime Officers in police forces around the country is embedded in the planning process – referenced in the National Planning Policy Framework and the National Planning Practice Guidance. Today, there are more than one million homes built to police crime prevention standards – that is approximately one-third of all new homes over the last 20 years – with reductions in crime of up to 87% compared to non-SBD developments. By working in partnership, we can help people be safe and secure in their homes. After all, that’s a basic desire and aspiration we all want. Let’s continue to work together to provide even safer and stronger communities over the next 30 years.
