Also online at: www.dijonline.co.uk 28 THE door industry journal spring 2021 Industry News Police Crime Prevention Initiatives (Police CPI) Secured by Design (SBD) has built a reputation for being the driving force behind improving the security of buildings over the last 32 years. Working with Government, SBD has influenced national planning policy to embed crime prevention in the planning process and establish police security standards into the building and construction industry. This has had benefits for a wide range of building sectors including residential, education, health and sport and leisure as well as retail, business, commercial and industrial. For example, more than one million homes have been built to SBD crime prevention standards across the UK – that’s 30% of all new homes built – with reductions in crime of up to 87% year-on- year as reported by Police Scotland in 2017. But what is not so widely known today is that SBD is part of Police Crime Prevention Initiatives (Police CPI), a police-owned organisation, which works on behalf of the Police Service around the UK to deter and reduce crime for the benefit of residents and reduce demand on hard-pressed Police Forces. Whilst SBD remains Police CPI’s most well-established and high-profile operation, there are also eight other ventures, which include: Police Crime Prevention Academy: The Academy is a ProQual approved centre which offers qualifications in crime prevention, designing out crime and problem-solving not only to police officers and military personnel but also to many other organisations in the public and private sectors that have community safety roles, and key professions, such as architects and planners. The Academy also offers distance and virtual learning qualifications. During the last year, the Academy provided guidance and training to support Police and Crime Commissioners with their bids as part of the Home Office’s Safer Streets Fund initiative. Police Digital Security Centre (Police DSC): The Police DSC seeks to reduce businesses’ vulnerability to cyber crime working across England and Wales with industry,
