Door Industry Journal - Spring 2021

THE door industry journal spring 2021 Also online at: www.dijonline.co.uk Secured by Design We are widely documented for our partnership working with a wide range of organisations, such as governments of the four UK nations and their police forces as well as companies, manufacturers, industry bodies, architects, planners, builders and developers. With our Police CPI Board including two Chief Constables and led by the Chair of the National Police Chiefs’ Council, we now work closely with the Home Office, other key government departments and specialist organisations involved in counter terrorism (see article on the pages opposite). I note that the Ministry of Housing Communities and Local Government’s Chief Planner has advised that where necessary, the advice offered by Designing Out Crime Officers (DOCOs) and Counter Terrorism Security Advisers, who are attached to police forces around the UK, should be incorporated into build schemes where appropriate to keep buildings and people safe. With these building blocks in place, we are in a position to continue to enhance the opportunities for all the companies and organisations we work with across our many established and fast emerging new crime prevention initiatives. However far down the road we travel to keep people safe and buildings secure, our SBD member companies will remain at the very heart of our operations to deter and reduce crime. To support and inform members, we have transformed our SBD website. It’s been completely reworked in format, and with new text and images, including dedicated crime prevention pages to provide advice and guidance on certain types of crime. Our homepage has received more than one million hits since it was relaunched in February 2019 – an average of 500,000 each year! Our focus currently is on developing our product search functionality. This is a very complex task but it will help the network of around 200 DOCOs find the right products for specific developments and open up opportunities for us to make our website not only a reference for Police Forces, manufacturers and the construction industry, but also to members of the public. Jon Cole, Chief Operating Officer Secured by Design A regular column by Jon Cole, Chief Operating Officer, Secured by Design, the official police security initiative, which has been delivering a wide range of crime prevention activities across the UK for over 30 years and operates a product-based police accreditation scheme for security-rated products. Jon Cole government, academia and law enforcement to champion better security. In April 2020, Police DSC commenced a two-year programme of activity with the Metropolitan Police to help London’s small and medium-sized businesses reduce their vulnerability to cyber crime. Police CPI has other initiatives too (see Police CPI website link at the end of this article). All security-related products from SBD member companies, which are listed on the SBD website, have achieved the Police Preferred Specification standard for their crime prevention and deterrent capabilities. From a traditional base of companies that specialise in doors, windows and locks, SBD membership has expanded and broadened over the years to include companies that concentrate in other sectors of the security market, such as external storage, asset marking, CCTV systems, and bicycle and motorcycle security – and most recently, products that improve the physical security of buildings to provide greater protection against terrorism. Because of the need and urgency around potential terror attacks, SBD has developed a dedicated area on its website specifically for counter terrorism products. These are products that have been required to pass more stringent, exacting and demanding security tests than those used for traditional residential and commercial purposes. Indeed, SBD’s website has been referenced in the National Counter Terrorism Security Office’s (NaCTSO) newly-released and updated Crowded Places guidance suite of documents. Guy Ferguson, Chief Executive Officer, Police CPI, comments: “I think we’ve achieved a huge amount for a not-for-profit organisation but there is still plenty more to do.” Photos in this feature courtesy of Meesons: www.meesons.com SBD: www.securedbydesign.com https://www.securedbydesign.com/guidance/ counter-terrorism#doors PCPI: www.policecpi.com
