Door & Hardware Federation (dhf) discusses the various combinations of doorsets in the market and the importance of these differences, and dhf’s Senior Training & Compliance Officer, Steve Hill, answers the question: Why specify doorsets? Doors can reach the market in several various amalgamations depending on material, client requirements and certification requirements. The two main options are thus: doorsets (where all of the components are supplied from a single source; this can include the door leaf, frame and hardware), and door assemblies (where components are combined from different suppliers, for example, the door and frame from one supplier, and the hardware from another supplier). “Some door types will only ever be supplied as doorsets due to the manufacturing processes required, while others will present the procurement chain with options,” explains Steve. “Once installed, the route to market holds less relevance, however, it can have important implications. “With regards to conformity marking, where an external door is to be conformity marked to EN 14351-1:2006 + A2:2016, this can only be achieved by supplying as a doorset,” continues Steve. “There is no possibility for conformity marking via any other route. External doors with fire ratings would additionally require certification to EN 16034:2014, which is also only possible for doorsets.” With regards to independent third Party Certification Schemes, these will primarily only be available for doorsets and dhf has long been a passionate advocate for third-party certification of the manufacture, installation, maintenance and inspection of fire and smoke doors. Similarly, security standards such as PAS 24 require the use of doorsets. The compatibility of components is also key; all of the components of the doorset will be compatible with each other, thus removing the potential for problems during installation created by unsuitable parts causing delays. “When all of the component parts of the finished door have come from a single source, communication and installation scheduling are greatly simplified on site, as is ongoing maintenance and repair, because both the contractor and the end user can approach the manufacturer without having to establish who is responsible for each individual component,” concludes Steve. “The use of doorsets simplifies the supply chain, ensuring that the installed product is compliant, safe to put on the market, functions as specified and is simple to manage throughout the lifetime of the product. We call this communication of information to the end user, the golden thread. This is made all the easier by the use of doorsets supplied from a single source, thereby reducing the sources of information required for compliance.” Manufacturers and distributors seeking to build confidence in their products and move closer towards implementing the golden thread can now supply consistent performance data to specifiers, contractors and building owners, through the ‘Product Data Templates’ for doorset, which can be downloaded from the dhf website: https://bit.ly/DHF-GenInfo Jeld-Wen Launches Online Platform to Streamline Doorset Specification Hosted on the JELD-WEN website, the platform will enable customers to easily pick, choose and visualise their preferred doorset requirements through a simple step-bystep configuration process.
