Apprenticeship Awareness: ADSA Survey Addressing Industry Skills Gaps Nearly 69% of non-apprenticeship levy-paying organisations were unaware that they only need to contribute 5% towards an apprentice’s study fees, a recent survey by the Automatic Door Suppliers Association (ADSA) has revealed. And this lack of knowledge could be limiting the number of skilled professionals entering the powered pedestrian door sector. ADSA carried out the survey as part of a review into the Apprenticeship for Powered Pedestrian Door Technicians, which it created and launched in 2020. This review aligns with recommendations from the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (iFATE), which advises that all apprenticeships undergo a formal review in their fourth year to assess their effectiveness. The goal was to identify barriers to enrolment and participation, ensuring that both employers and apprentices can maximise the programme’s benefits. iFATE announced during National Apprenticeship Week in February that the Government has listened to employers’ needs for apprenticeships to be more flexible. This will see the introduction of shorter apprenticeships from August 2025 (subject to the parliamentary timetable), with the minimum length reduced from 12 to 8 months. The new development will allow training to be delivered and completed faster where that makes sense for a given industry, or an individual has significant prior learning. To date, South Staffordshire College has delivered to more than 70 apprentices within seven cohorts at its Tamworth campus. The college was specifically chosen for its state-of-the-art workshop facilities, Midlands-based location - making it equally accessible from both northern and southern parts of the UK - and its strong reputation for vocational training. The two-year programme combines on-the-job experience with 80 days undertaken at the college for classroom and workshop tuition. ADSA’s Survey: Scope and Participation An electronic survey was distributed to 1,800 potential respondents across the industry over a six-week period. The survey sought to evaluate the programme’s effectiveness and capture views on how well it addresses industry skill shortages. One of its key features was the inclusion of free-text responses, allowing participants to share detailed opinions beyond multiple-choice answers. The richness of this qualitative data has provided ADSA with invaluable insights which will now inform selected interviews with industry leaders. These will further refine the findings and development proposals before they are presented to ADSA’s executive team. Key Findings: Barriers and Challenges The survey results highlighted several major barriers preventing greater enrolment in the apprenticeship scheme: • Limited awareness: 31.8% of respondents were unfamiliar with the programme, despite its industry-wide relevance • Travel and location concerns: 28.8% cited accessibility and distance from the training provider as an obstacle • Time away from the business: 19.7% of respondents expressed concerns about apprentices being absent from work for training sessions Also online at: www.dijonline.co.uk 12 THE door industry journal spring 2025 Industry News

However, the most startling finding was that 60% of respondents – smaller businesses which do not pay the apprenticeship levy - were unaware that they could still offset up to 95% of apprenticeship training costs, making it a far more affordable option than previously assumed. In contrast, levy-paying members were largely aware of financial support mechanisms and were more likely to invest in apprenticeships. Despite these challenges, there was still strong support for the programme, with 73.4% of respondents stating that they found the apprenticeship effective in addressing the industry’s skills gap. However, opinions on the current two-year duration were mixed, with some participants arguing that it was suitable while others preferred a shorter timeframe of 18 months or even one year. Recommendations for Improvement Based on the feedback received, the survey identified several key recommendations to enhance the accessibility and effectiveness of the apprenticeship programme: 1. Greater awareness: to better inform businesses about the financial benefits and value of apprenticeship training. 2. Enhanced course content: incorporating more practical training, particularly focusing on fault-finding, compliance regulations and real-world troubleshooting scenarios. 3. Flexible delivery and duration: more adaptable structure that would allow apprentices to progress at a pace that aligns with employer needs. 4. Additional support mechanisms: further assistance in managing apprenticeships for employers, including mentorship guidance and structured progress updates. Exploring Short-Duration Courses One of the most intriguing recommendations to emerge from the survey is the potential development of short-duration courses tailored to individuals with varying levels of experience. These courses would take key elements of the existing apprenticeship programme and adapt them for different career stages, offering a more flexible learning approach. Such an initiative could benefit not only new entrants but also experienced professionals looking to upskill without committing to a full two-year programme. Moving Forward Ken Price, Managing Director of ADSA, welcomed the findings and reaffirmed the association’s commitment to continuous improvement: “We appreciate the valuable insights from our members. This feedback provides a foundation for future improvements and underscores the need for increased awareness. We are committed to refining the apprenticeship programme to better serve the industry and support the development of skilled technicians.” Carl Black, field support manager for dormakaba UK, expressed his support for the current apprenticeship structure: “From my perspective, the two-year duration and course content provide apprentices with a solid foundation to succeed in this industry. Rather than making changes to the programme, I would support a focus on encouraging businesses to support apprenticeships and invest in the next generation of skilled professionals. The current format works well and our priority should be to increase industry participation to ensure a strong future workforce.” The Apprenticeship for Powered Pedestrian Door Technicians has played a crucial role in equipping individuals with the necessary skills to succeed in the industry. While awareness and accessibility remain key challenges, the survey findings provide a roadmap for future enhancements. By addressing these barriers, implementing recommended improvements and considering the introduction of short-duration courses, ADSA is taking proactive steps to strengthen the industry talent pipeline. With continued investment in training and development, the sector can look forward to a well-equipped, highly skilled workforce that meets the demands of today’s fast-evolving market. John Nichol took centre stage with a keynote address that left everyone buzzing. His message resonated deeply, challenging everyone to adopt that resilient mindset in their own businesses. Also online at: www.dijonline.co.uk 20 THE door industry journal spring 2025 Industry News New Code of Practice for Fire and Escape Door Hardware Published The Door & Hardware Federation (dhf) and the Guild of Architectural Ironmongers (GAI) have announced the publication of a comprehensively revised Code of Practice for the selection of building hardware for fire-resisting and escape door assemblies and doorsets. The new edition, issue No. 5 and the first revision in more than a decade, significantly update and consolidate previous guidelines to reflect the industry’s latest legislative requirements and best practices. Issue 5 of the Code replaces the previous issue 4, as well as all previous codes of practice published by the Association of Building Hardware Manufacturers (now dhf) and the Guild of Architectural Ironmongers. All of these codes have been withdrawn to ensure that professionals are working with the most current and relevant information. The code, which addresses a wide range of legislative requirements, provides an essential reference and resource for a broad spectrum of construction industry professionals, including architects, building control officers, fire officers, responsible persons, duty holders, manufacturers, specifiers and suppliers of building hardware and fire doors. Such legislative requirements include: Construction Products Regulations in both the EU and UK; Building Regulations throughout the UK and Ireland, including the Building Regulations 2010 (England & Wales), Building (Scotland) Regulations 2004, Building Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2012 and Building Regulations 19972021 (Ireland); Workplace Fire Safety Legislation across the UK and Ireland, such as the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005; and Equality Legislation applicable in Great Britain, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. In addition, the Code considers third-party certification schemes and declarations of conformity with relevant standards, ensuring that the guidance provided is both comprehensive and up to date. The Code applies to building hardware used on timber fire doors with up to two hours of fire resistance and steel fire doors with up to four hours of fire resistance. The hardware items covered are categorised into essential items necessary for the successful operation of the doors (such as pivots and hinges, door closing devices, latch or locks, intumescent and smoke seals and panic bolts) and optional (non-essential) items that could potentially cause door failure if not properly selected or installed. Several new sections relate to electric locking and access control, which are becoming increasingly important in the world of building hardware. “This revision is the result of more than two years’ work by the teams at the dhf and GAI in conjunction with technical specialists at the leading companies in our industry,” concludes Michael Skelding, General Manager at dhf. “The result should be seen as an essential reference document for anyone involved in the selection, installation and testing of building hardware and furniture for fire and escape doors.” “The primary goal of this Code of Practice is to ensure that key stakeholders throughout the construction industry have access to the most current and comprehensive advice on selecting hardware that meets the stringent requirements for fire safety and escape routes,” explains GAI’s technical manager, Douglas Masterson. “While the Code is advisory, it is designed to provide robust guidance that aligns with the latest legal standards. And while compliance with the Code does not confer immunity from legal, local authority or insurance requirements, it will significantly enhance the safety and reliability of fire-resisting and escape door assemblies.” Code of Practice: Hardware for Fire and Escape Doors edition 5 can be downloaded for free at www.firecode.org.uk Want your article to feature in this magazine? OPEN DOORS Lets talk! The way we communicate, especially in business, has evolved significantly in recent years. Emails and Teams meetings have largely replaced phone calls and in-person meetings. But have we moved too far in this direction? Possibly. One major concern is the decline of face-to-face meetings - and, by extension, the loss of valuable networking opportunities. While Teams meetings became essential during the pandemic, offering a cost-effective, time-saving and environmentally friendly way to stay connected, they do have their limitations. Virtual interactions simply can’t replicate the spontaneity and personal connection of in-person conversations. That’s why events like the recent dhf Conference at RAF Cosford are so important. By all accounts, it was a great success (see article on page 14), proving that face-to-face meetings still have a crucial role in today’s business world. These gatherings allow us to reconnect, build relationships and engage in some good oldfashioned networking - something digital meetings just can’t fully replace. And, of course, we will be doing more of these kind of events in the future. Made from a highstrength glass fibre fabric reinforced with stainless steel wire and coated with a fire-retardant aluminium pigmented polyurethane, these curtains remain concealed within a discreet headbox until deployed. When a fire is detected, they automatically descend, forming a protective barrier that helps compartmentalise spaces and contain the fire. This mechanism not only enhances occupant safety but also minimises structural damage by restricting fire to a specific area. Fire Curtains vs Fire Shutters: Key Differences Fire shutters, typically made from heavy-duty galvanised steel, are known for their strength and durability. While they provide reliable protection in high-risk environments, their rigid construction can sometimes limit their adaptability in modern architectural settings. Fire curtains, in contrast, are made from lightweight, fire-resistant fabric, offering a flexible and discreet alternative without compromising safety. From an aesthetic perspective, fire shutters can be bulky and challenging to integrate seamlessly into a building’s design. Their mechanical components can disrupt architectural flow, especially in contemporary open-plan spaces. Fire curtains, however, remain hidden within a compact headbox when not in use, ensuring a clean and unobtrusive look while still providing crucial fire protection. Another key factor is weight and structural impact. Fire shutters are significantly heavier than fire curtains and often require reinforced structural support for installation. This added weight can be a limitation in buildings with space or load-bearing constraints. In contrast, fire curtains are lightweight, reducing strain on the building’s framework and making them ideal for a wider range of structures, from historic buildings to modern commercial spaces. Advantages of Fire Curtains Fire curtains offer several key benefits over traditional fire shutters, particularly in terms of design flexibility, space efficiency and operational performance. These advantages make them an attractive option for architects, designers and building owners who seek to balance fire safety with aesthetics and functionality. One of the most significant benefits of fire curtains is their design versatility. Unlike bulky fire shutters, fire curtains remain hidden when not in use, allowing In the fire safety industry, selecting the right protective barrier is essential for safeguarding both lives and property. While traditional fire shutters have long been the standard, fire curtains are emerging as an innovative alternative, offering distinct advantages in various applications. This article explores what fire curtains are, how they compare to fire shutters, and the benefits they provide to clients. Industry News

Whether in commercial, residential, or heritage buildings, fire curtains provide a seamless safety solution without interfering with the building’s aesthetic vision. Space optimisation is another major advantage. Fire curtains require minimal room for their retraction mechanism, making them ideal for areas where space is limited. Unlike fire shutters, which occupy significant overhead space, fire curtains integrate easily into ceilings or walls. This feature makes them particularly useful in lobbies, atriums and open-plan offices where maintaining an open and spacious feel is essential. Additionally, fire curtains enhance operational efficiency. Modern fire curtain systems integrate seamlessly with building management and fire alarm systems, allowing for automatic deployment in the event of a fire. This automation ensures rapid activation, reducing the need for manual intervention and improving overall fire safety. By responding instantly to fire alarms, fire curtains help contain smoke and flames, offering vital protection for occupants and property. Client Benefits Investing in fire curtains offers numerous advantages, from enhanced safety to regulatory compliance and cost-effectiveness. Their innovative design not only strengthens fire protection but also contributes to efficient space utilisation and financial savings. One of the primary benefits is improved safety. By containing fire and smoke effectively, fire curtains help prevent the spread of hazardous fumes, creating safer evacuation routes for building occupants. This containment reduces the risk of injury and provides additional time for safe evacuation. Fire curtains can also be strategically placed to compartmentalise fire-prone areas, further minimising potential damage. Regulatory compliance is another crucial factor. A1S Fire & Smoke Curtains are designed and manufactured to meet stringent fire safety standards, ensuring compliance with legal requirements. Adhering to these regulations enhances safety while helping businesses avoid potential fines, legal issues, or costly modifications. By choosing fire curtains, clients can be confident that their fire protection measures meet industry best practices. Why Choose A1S Fire & Smoke Curtains? With over 30 years of expertise, A1S Fire & Smoke Curtains is a leading UK manufacturer, installer and exporter of fire and smoke curtains. The company has played a vital role in high-profile projects worldwide, including Selfridges Oxford Street, the Qatar 2022 World Cup Stadia and the Burj Khalifa. Conclusion Fire curtains are revolutionising fire safety, offering a highly effective alternative to traditional fire shutters. Their compact, fire-resistant fabric construction allows for discreet and flexible installation while maintaining superior fire protection. With advantages in design, space efficiency and operational functionality, fire curtains seamlessly integrate into modern buildings without compromising safety. Clients benefit from enhanced fire protection, regulatory compliance and potential cost savings, making fire curtains a smart choice for contemporary fire safety solutions.
