Exova Warringtonfire was called in to provide testing services when RSL Bristol Ltd, a leading producer of security shutter systems, needed its product testing to the high standards of Secured By Design (SBD) - the groundbreaking national police safety scheme. Following extensive testing, the specialist roller shutter lintel system designed and manufactured by RSL, based in Taunton, Somerset, was certified to level three of Exova Warringtonfire’s own Certisecure scheme, STS202 - which meets the entry level requirements of Secured By Design. The accreditation is the first time that Exova has certified a roller shutter door under the stringent conditions of level BR3, which verifies that a product can withstand a series of professional attacks simulating burglary attempts. To achieve level BR3, a door must withstand numerous attacks for up five minutes, by experts using equipment including 700mm-long crow bars, cold chisels, cordless drills, hand axes and a car jack. Mark West, operations manager for security products certification at Exova Warringtonfire, said: “It is a huge step forward for roller shutter door security to have certified the first roller shutter door to the rigorous standards of STS202 level BR3. “The Secured By Design principles have been proven to reduce crime risk by up to 75 per cent, by designing out crime through physical security and processes. “RSL Bristol had previously achieved level BR2 on their product, but wanted to go one step further with their Elite security shutter and were able to be the first company tested and certificated to level BR3. “Customers who test to this standard successfully are showing the world that their products are of the highest safety standards and committing to cutting crime.” 10 METRE HIGH GILGEN DOORS KEEP WIND TURBINE PYLON PRODUCTION MOVING Gilgen Door Systems UK Ltd has provided TAG Energy Solutions with six enormous roller shutter doors for their new Offshore Renewable Development facility, Teesside. Gilgen installed six 10 metre high, 8.5 metre wide, insulated roller shutter doors to the 16,000m blast and paint facility of the Billingham site. The facility features two lanes, each sectioned off into two areas by three roller shutters. The two areas created enable the giant offshore wind turbine transition pieces to be sand blasted and then painted in two separate environments. Sitting on the banks of the river Tees and facing the North Sea, the external doors were required to withstand high wind loading and were fitted with special guides by Gilgen to overcome this. The doors also feature 20mm foam filled lath that provides increased insulation and security. Jeremy Speke, Build Manager for TAG said “The facility enables TAG to undertake large-scale shot blasting and painting operations in a technically advanced carbon friendly and controlled environment. The roller shutter doors supplied by Gilgen Door Systems form an integral part of this cutting edge facility for which we are rightly proud”. Paul Barson General Manager Gilgen Industrial Door Division said “The sheer size of the doors meant that this project needed to be approached in a different way; instead of being assembled barrel then lath by lath, each complete door and barrel was lifted in one go. We had to meet very stringent Health & Safety stipulations, set out by TAG to ensure site safety during the lift” .
