The idea behind the project is a simulated journey around the world measured at eight degrees 34 minutes east. This is the longitude of Bremerhaven and all the other locations on the journey: Switzerland, Sardinia, the Sahel, the African rain forest, the Antarctic, Samoa, Alaska and the north Frisian island of Langeness. To ensure the safety of the visitors Teckentrup delivered about 160 fire and smoke protection doors for the use between Antarctic and rain forest. The doors provide a fully functional escape route whatever the climate inside the room. The image shows what became known as the door to heaven with its “now you see it now you don’t” finish! Initially close to 30,000 Urban Edge doorsets in a range of finishes including veneered, laminated and primed were supplied to 11 blocks within the Athletes Village - each of which holds around 300 apartments. Integral to the specification was the use of EnduraCor within the doorsets; the cost-effective engineered performance core is both versatile and stable, offering severe duty rating, up to 30RwdB sound reduction, plus a fire rating of up to 60 minutes. With sustainability a key theme of 2012, the long-lasting durability of EnduraCor was key, as the specification looked beyond the initial remit, taking into account the longer-term needs of the development. Secured by Design doorsets were also supplied to the apartment entrances, for enhanced safety and security, both during the Games and going forward. After the games closed in August 2012, Leaderflush Shapland have started the process of supplying a further 3,000 doorsets to the East Village development, the lasting legacy of the Athletes Village, which has been designed to provide essential new housing for East London. Urban Edge riser doors with glass vision panels were also supplied for the corridors of the blocks. The East Village has been transformed into 2,818 new homes, including 1,379 affordable homes and houses, creating an essential residential quarter. New parklands, open space, new transport links and community facilities will surround the new communities. For more information on Urban Edge products please visit http://www.urbanedgedoorsets.co.uk
