78 THE door industry journal summer 2014 building hardware feature BJ WALLER HELPS TO TRANSFORM CAMBRIDGE’S ICONIC CHURCH BJ Waller is pleased to announce completion of a redevelopment project on Great St Mary’s Church in Cambridge. Also online at: www.dijonline.co.uk “The bronze finish was employed by BJ Waller to create synergy between old and new” Situated in the city centre between Senate House and Market Square, the church is for University of Cambridge students, as well as being open for the public to take in the fantastic views from the top of it’s famous tower. The development was given the go-ahead when research discovered that visitors often perceived the church was closed, due to the magnificent oak doors at the west end of the church having to be shut during bad weather. Work was needed to rectify this, as well as modernising the entrance. With a church residing on the site since 1200, and the current building dating back to the late 15th Century, choosing products that retained the original style of the church was incredibly important. Working alongside Archimage Architects from Wilburton in Cambridgeshire and church restoration specialists, F. A. Valiant & Sons LTD, BJ Waller provided door furniture, locks & latches, and folding door gear. Ensuring a high quality of finish that would suit such a historic building, BJ Waller was able to offers it expertise and scheduling services to specify some fantastic products, including Royde & Tucker Grade 13 Triple Knuckle Hinges, Samuel Heath Powermatic Door Closers and a range of items by Frank Allart manufactured in the UK. All hardware was produced in the finishes needed to fit in with the church’s 15th century building style, as well as maximising security features. A bronze effect was employed throughout to create synergy between the new and original pieces present. The two sets of folding doors were made in oak and stained to fit in with the original wood throughout the church. The doors were placed in front of the shop to provide safety and security, as well as allowing the gift shop and heritage areas to stay open during church events. This ability to separate space was new to the church, meaning better use of space throughout the year. BJ Waller supplied Frank Allart Espagnolettes, as well as the first door leaf hung on a Heavy Duty Floor Pivot for its folding doors. Kate Phizacklea from Great St Marys Church said: “The work was done as part of the big redevelopment project which took over a year to complete. We are incredibly pleased with the results, It’s the little details that make all the difference really.” Sales Director of BJ Waller, Luke Piper, said that, “It was fantastic to be involved with the St Mary’s Church project, it’s a beautiful building that helps to form the centre piece of Cambridge.” Further information about BJ Waller, including other projects, news and promotions can be found at www.bjwaller.co.uk “BJ Waller supplied locks and handles for interior doors” “Two sets of folding doors were introduced for safety and security” Providing ironmongery supplies for the £1.7m rejuvenation of the church, BJ Waller is proud to be a part of this momentous renovation in the church’s history. “Door furniture and folding door gear was supplied by BJ Waller” “Great St Mary’s Church in Cambridge, undergoing a £1.7m rejuvenation”
