Sustainability will be high on the conference agenda. The two organisations are working closely together to provide the means for DHF hardware members to measure the environmental impact caused by the use of their products in buildings. The introduction of the Construction Products Regulation (CPR) across Europe makes provision for the declaration of the environmental impact of all construction products including building hardware. This enables architects and those involved in construction to make an informed choice of building hardware. This ensures that every building project is designed and built in such a way that the use of natural resources is sustainable and the carbon footprint is minimized over the life cycle of the building. ARGE represents the interests of DHF and 14 other hardware trade associations in Europe and Scandinavia. It lobbies a number of European authorities and institutes including the influential European Committee of Standardisation (CEN) which sets standards under CPR. “We’re proud to be hosting ARGE’s annual conference in Stratford-upon-Avon this September,” said Michael Skelding, General Manager and Secretary of the DHF, which represents the UK’s leading manufacturers of locks and door hardware. “It will further cement the working partnership between the two organisations. This co-operation between us allows our members to manage the crucial changes needed to meet the sustainability requirements in CPR and help them compete successfully in the UK construction market.” For more information about ARGE and DHF visit www.arge.org and www.dhfonline.org.uk . NEW STEEL WINDOWS AND DOORS PROVIDE A WARM VIEW OF LONDON Providing views across the River Thames towards The Shard and other London landmarks, the windows at President’s Quay, in St Katherine’s Way near Tower Bridge, have suffered from significant exposure to the weather. Residents in a number of flats were consequently keen to have replacement steel windows and doors installed that had a similar aesthetic but achieved improved thermal efficiency. Steel Window Association member, NSB Casements, were therefore awarded a contract to carry out the works. President’s Quay is an historic docklands warehouse building which was converted to, fifteen one-, two- and three- bedroom flats many years ago. The replacement steel windows and doors at that time were of W20 style and single glazed. Within the flats, each of the rooms either incorporated a double door or side hung vent windows. The new windows and doors, manufactured by NSB Casements, match the original design but are fabricated from W40 system profiles and have currently been installed in four flats. As the most modern version of the traditional W20 steel window, the W40 system achieves continuity of style by offering similar attributes in terms of slenderness and light transmission. Triple glazing is an option, although warm-edge spacer bars, gas filling and other enhancements enable Part L of the Building Regulations to be complied with in new build, for most applications, when specifying double glazed units. All the steel windows and doors manufactured for President’s Quay were hot- dipped, galvanised and finished with a white powder coating to provide and almost maintenance-free life span. A multipoint locking system was added for maximum security - W40 system installations can be supplied to Secured by Design standard. This design not only dramatically improves the U-value against single glazed windows but, with the multipoint locking system, draughts are practically eliminated.
