The UK is a great example - it has always based the specification of fire doors on BS 476, limiting the market to levels that are not conducive to the application of volume production. The new norm is a great opportunity that levels the playing field across the EU and drives best value competition – a scenario Teckentrup welcomes.” Volume drives value The opening up of the UK market to volume manufacture is sure to bring opportunities for specifiers to select products with enhanced performance characteristics. An example is the Teckentrup Insulated fire doorset range. Teckentrup is already manufacturing doors to BS EN1634- 1 and has, for many years, focussed on doors that not only have integrity under fire conditions but also insulation. Fire doors are a life product: “Provide building occupants with sufficient means of escape to reach places of safety before the environment becomes life threatening”. Fire door Integrity takes no account of radiated heat and, as the chart illustrates, the difference in performance when compared to an insulated fire door is an eye opener. Teckentrup insulated fire doors are already the standard choice across the most of the EU and with the new hEN the products adoption in the UK is highly likely. Jim Rodger again, “We’re launching our T60 FSA & T90 DF FSA fire doorsets that offer up to 120 minutes integrity (E120) and 90 minutes insulation (I90) at prices comparable to traditional integrity-only honeycomb UK “old spec” fire doors. The doors not only benefit from insulation but have larger, heavier duty 3-D adjustable hinges, application designed frames alongside the standard rebated frames that result in wider clear openings for the same opening size. We also have a unique all glass fire door rated to 30 minutes for insulation and integrity – it’s quite something to see-thru and is sure to be an architects favourite in no time.” He continued “We know the UK market is ready for insulated fire doors and with our 1.1 million sqft automated manufacturing capacity across two sites, we can make every door to order, rather than cutting down from blanks. We’re meeting the “new” standard with a mature product of proven track record at a price we know is competitive”. Early adoption makes sense? Whilst new standards require change that can seem onerous, Teckentrup sees early adoption as advantageous for specifiers. “Firstly, specifiers gain the peace of mind from removing concerns over due diligence – is the use of non compliant products during the coexistence period prudent, or potentially open to legal challenge when compliant products are available with no cost penalty? Secondly, contracts with long-term rollouts and the requirement for replacement products to be fitted as products reach their lifespan may find liability concerns if a switch to a new design part way through a contract is required to meet the mandatory deadline.” Said Jim. Teckentrup is immersed in a culture of compliance and takes very seriously its responsibility to ensure products are tested to the performance standards claimed and are suited to the performance and functional requirements specified. These responsibilities are of prime importance when dealing with life safety products, such as fire rated doors, doors to escape routes and emergency exits. Teckentrup considers upholding standards as a powerful tool to demonstrate the capability and strength of its business. All of Teckentrup’s products are also certified in accordance with the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), a seal of quality that supplies all information on the life cycle and ecological assessment for the current building certification systems. BREEAM - Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Methodology - is also fully adopted. Its processes and products are certified and tested to the following: Business Processes ISO 14025 & EN15804 Environmental Product Declaration DIN EN ISO 9001 Quality management DIN EN ISO 14001 Environmental management DIN EN ISO 50001 Energy management Product Performance (Sub-Norms) EN1634-1 Fire resistance DIN4102 Fire resistance DIN18095 Smoke resistance EN1627-30 Physical attack resistance, static and dynamic loading EN1062 Bullet resistance Exova STS202 Physical attack resistance DIN EN20140 & ISO140-3 Sound attenuation EN12207 Air permeability EN12208 Water resistance EN12210 Wind resistance ISO10077-1 & ISO12567-1 Thermal insulation It’s quite a list and demonstrates beyond doubt that Teckentrup is committed to developing the market for its products in the UK!
