Door Industry Journal - Summer 2016
summer 2016 THE door industry journal First of all, I would like to welcome all of our readers and invite each and every one of you to set aside some time to read and enjoy our 65th issue, which extends to over 120 pages. When I wrote the welcome for our Spring issue back in March, the possibility of leaving the EU was nearly three months away and the thought of us having a new Prime Minister by July was only a vague possibility - now Brexit is the hottest topic in the media. The discussion about our departure has a long way to go yet, with many more questions than answers at this time, before a full-blown Brexit takes place. If you have any concerns about how Brexit will affect your business from a regulatory point of view, here is an extract from a notice sent to members of the DHF on June 24th following the result of the referendum. How will Brexit affect European standards, regulations and directives? “The referendum vote for the UK to leave the European Union does not itself change the law; the next step is for the UK government to invoke Article 50 of the EU treaty. This will initiate a two-year period for negotiations on the arrangements for separation. During this period, EU laws will continue to apply, but the UK government will not take part in decision making at the EU level. The ultimate effect remains to be seen, because the negotiation may preserve some elements of EU law in force, while the UK government will no doubt enact national regulations to replace other EU laws once they no longer apply”. We will report on further developments via our blog, newsletter and future issues of this magazine. I trust our latest issue will provide you with an interesting and informative read, so until our next issue in late November 2016, I wish you an enjoyable and (hopefully hot) Summer.
