Door Industry Journal - Summer 2017

THE door industry journal summer 2017 Also online at: www.dijonline.co.uk OPEN DOORS END OF YEAR REPORT dhf ’s year end is March so we are now finalising our accounts and can see how we performed against our budget and targets. In summary, it was another good year for us. I will not go into too much detail but will highlight a few points: • Membership is at an all time high of 400 • 1200 individuals have now successfully completed a dhf Safety Diploma course • There has been a significant upturn in demand for dhf /BRE fire door safety training courses • We have developed a stronger relationship with Trading Standards Officers • New branding/logo has been launched, to be followed by a new website in July • We have re-commenced automated gate training in Ireland But, as they say, 90% there, 90% still to do! What does that mean? It means that there is an immense amount of work still to be done and always will be. Certainly, we can be pleased with the growth of dhf over the last few years but, really, 400 members is only scratching the surface. Let’s just consider the automated gate and garage door markets. How many installers are there in the UK? 2000? 3000? … probably a lot more. And that means that there are many installers who have not been properly trained in key areas such as the Machinery Directive and the Construction Products Regulations. In no way am I degrading the important training that some manufacturers offer their customers but of course, in many cases, understandably, this training is more product specific, rather than covering in detail compliancy issues such as standards, regulations and risk assessments. Talking of training, we are pleased to announce that we are strengthening our training team with the appointment of Mike Lee … see page 36 for further details. Initially, Mike will be focussing on presenting some of the automated gate courses but, moving forward, we plan that Mike will get involved in other training courses, particularly garage doors.
