The Youth and Community Centre Security Scheme has led to four youth clubs – two in Lambeth and one each in Haringey and Westminster – receiving security improvements to help reduce violent crime in and around these premises and to create safer places for young people. Security features include the installation of heavy-duty doors to mitigate against violent attacks, while allowing staff to remotely lock and unlock the doors to prevent passers-by from entering the venue freely; and an airlock lobby to enable staff to monitor who is coming in and out of the youth club. The objective is to ensure that staff feel more in control and equipped to protect the young people who attend. London Fire Brigade carried out inspections to identify and mitigate any fire hazards and provide advice around fire evacuation plans and the Met’s Cyber Protect Team offered cyber protection advice to help combat cybercrime. The scheme also provided ten youth clubs with defibrillators and the necessary training to use them in the event of a violent attack. Further funding has been secured indefinitely to ensure the scheme benefits more youth clubs and community centres across London. Two SBD member companies have been involved in designing, manufacturing and installing security products as part of security overhauls. The companies are Premier Security and Fire Security Consultants Limited, of Ilford, Essex and Warrior Doors, of Birmingham, West Midlands. Premier Security assisted with a fully-glazed, fire-rated internal door and screen systems reaching LPS 1175 SR2 security rating standard; external, electronically controlled steel shutters to SR2 standard; and electronically controlled safe-room steel doors to LPS 1175 SR2 standard.
