Also online at: www.dijonline.co.uk 30 THE door industry journal summer 2023 Industry News Ellard’s Carbon Footprint and How it’s Being Reduced Following Ellard’s win of the Indutrade (Ellard’s parent company) Sustainability Award for Environment, the company would like to share some of the work that’s being done on its sustainability journey. Over the past year, the Environmental, Social, and Governance group has been working hard to extract and collate Ellard’s CO2e figures for 2022. A carbon footprint consists of scopes one through three and focuses on all elements of the business. This has aided in uncovering the most relevant climate risks and identifying areas where it is possible to reduce emissions. Each scope covers how and where the company emits CO2e emissions in its daily operation. Here’s how each scope affects the Carbon Footprint. Scope One Scope one covers Ellard’s greenhouse gas emissions that are made directly. This includes company vehicles. Currently, the company emits 76 tonnes of CO2e as a result of sales and site visits. This number has been significantly reduced by providing the travelling sales team with electric and hybrid cars, and soon all Ellard vans will be changed to hybrid. Scope Two These are the emissions that Ellard makes indirectly. This will include any electricity or energy that is used that has not been directly generated. Significantly reduced emissions in this scope have been achieved by switching to renewable electricity. The installation of the solar roof, completed in April 2023, will result in no longer relying on the national grid and rising energy prices. This further decreases the scope 2 emissions and increases the company’s profitability as they will send excess Pv generated back to the grid. Scope Three Scope three is the largest category and is responsible for most of the emissions. These are the emissions that are indirectly responsible for through upstream and downstream activities. For example, bought-in goods equate to 3,824 tonnes of CO2e, which contributes to 88% of the carbon footprint. As a distributor of automation products, the company heavily relies on bought-in goods and it is understood that it will never be possible to completely erase this number, but measures taken will continue to look to find solutions to improve it. This also includes employee commuting, which works out to 32 tonnes of CO2e. Last year, an EV salary sacrifice scheme was put into motion, which has been a success with numerous employees choosing to move to an electric car! This action will help Ellard significantly reduce emissions produced in scope three. The overall footprint has been calculated as 4,325 tonnes of CO2e, and it was possible to manage a 53% reduction in both scopes one and two during 2022. When it comes to sustainable action, Ellard will be 100% transparent with its journey as the company continues on the path to reducing its carbon footprint. From the data received in 2022, the aim is to further reduce by a further 50 tonnes by the end of 2023. www.ellard.co.uk Have you liked our Facebook and Twitter pages yet?
