The Emirates Air Line which opened for the Olympics is operated by Transport for London and can carry up to an estimated 2,500 people per hour from Emirates Greenwich Peninsula for the O 2 arena to the Emirates Royal Docks and the Excel arena. The network contains 34 gondolas, each with a maximum capacity of 10 passengers. The terminal buildings are an important element of the day to day operations of the network. The door and shutter technology installed in the cable car terminals by Ingersoll Rand is specifically designed to ensure the highest levels of safety and flexibility in a wide range of environments. It includes four Dor-O-Matic manual, stainless steel doors, five roller shutters and 17 Martin Roberts stainless steel doors. The contract was awarded to the Ingersoll team based on their project management background, competitive pricing and track record of developing products with high standards of reliability, comfort and safety. The team also had a proven history of partnership working with Principal Contractor, Mace, and was able to supply the complete door and ironmongery package using its own Briton ironmongery range. The Emirates Air Line project is an iconic development to serve Londoners and visitors alike. The project required, working to extremely strict deadlines, incredibly accurate planning and project execution, high-spec finishes and involved managing the logistical challenge of working across both sides of the Thames. The end result is superb and more importantly, one which the people of London will be able to enjoy safely for a very long time.
