Door Industry Journal - Winter 2016

winter 2016 THE door industry journal Christmas is fast approaching and I’m sure you’re starting to wind down, ready to enjoy an extended and well-deserved break. But, before you reach for the mince pies and crack open the wine, please take the time to cast your eye over our latest issue. In the summer, you may remember I talked about the consequences of Brexit for the door industry. I also promised you some more information on the subject. I’m as good as my word – on page 16 you’ll find an article by Mark McEvoy, commercial director for Garage Door Systems in Ballymena, that analyses the fallout from Brexit and what it means for your business. I do urge you to read this, as Brexit will undoubtedly have an effect. You may have noticed that post-referendum price increases are already being felt by the industry as a whole. As Mark says, this is no time to adopt a ‘close your eyes and wait and see’ attitude – we all need to understand what’s happening and adapt accordingly. On page 6 you’ll find another cautionary tale, as the company responsible for the metal door that injured Harrison Ford at Pinewood Studios a couple of years ago, has been heavily fined. DHF CEO Bob Perry offers his analysis of the case and its implications. You’ll also find Bob on page 9, warning companies to be ‘compliant not complacent’ when it comes to supply and installation of doors and gates. This is reiterated and expanded upon on page 65, where you can read some valuable guidance from the DHF on how to comply when fitting a new powered roller garage door, as well as the safety issues to watch out for. Finally, thank you to all our readers, advertisers and contributors for your support throughout 2016. I wish everyone a merry Christmas and a prosperous and happy New Year.
