Door Industry Journal - Winter 2016

THE door industry journal winter 2016 Also online at: www.dijonline.co.uk OPEN DOORS BE COMPLIANT NOT COMPLACENT Like many organisations, DHF has a number of goals and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). In the DIJ summer publication, I talked about training, which is one of our KPIs; this time, I want to talk about product compliance. The supply and installation of compliant product is extremely important - firstly, because it ensures that the product is safe and legal and gives assurances to the owner & user and, secondly, it is simply unfair and unacceptable that DHF compliant members should be losing business to non compliant companies who are cutting corners to save money. Whenever DHF is made aware of a compliancy issue involving a non DHF member, it is usually referred to the relevant Trading Standards Office for investigation. We are a member of the Trading Standards Institute and, over the last few years, we have built up a good relationship with many Trading Standards Officers. To further our relationship with TSOs we have just completed work on three guidance documents on (1) garage doors, (2) industrial doors and (3) powered gates, specifically tailored to help enforcement bodies. These three publications are being mailed to over 200 Trading Standards Officers. Compliance is important in all the industries that DHF represents but our involvement is particularly important in the garage door, industrial door and powered gate sectors. Furthermore, there is one non compliance issue that crops up over and over again and that is when a single beam photocell is used as the primary safety device on a roller garage door. It is simply illegal to supply a new garage door that relies on a simple photocell as its principal safety device. Clearly, DHF members will know this but, in an effort to reach the industry as a whole, we have decided upon the unusual step of taking a full page in this publication to inform the industry at large … see page 65. P C Henderson’s Straight Sliding 307 hardware comprising tracks and hangers was specified for its unique product capacity of 2000kg. The architectural hardware consultant working on the Shanghai Disneyland project required sliding gear that was capable of moving 2 large gates with a weight of around 3500kg. By working closely with the fabricator a solution to meet the weight capacity of the large gates was found by merging 4 hangers into 1 to carry the gates effortlessly. Due to their large size, the fabricator installed the 307 sliding hardware together with the gates on-site, utilising 11 tracks, 18 hangers, 60 brackets and 10 stops. The system is versatile and designed to cover any width of opening, with any number of gates or doors used on single or multiple lines of track. The system has also been designed to accommodate a wicket door within the large gates or doors to allow for ease of access for personnel on a daily basis. In addition, the doors or gates are able to slide to one or both sides to accommodate different building designs. For more information please visit www.pchenderson.com
