I can hear the sighs already……not another Regulation but I am afraid that we cannot ignore this one. The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) comes into effect on 25th May 2018. It will affect us all and it will apply in the UK in one form or another regardless of Brexit. So what’s it all about? GDPR will affect anyone holding data on EU citizens but clearly the impact will be greatest on companies, regardless of their size. It is important that all employees in a company are made aware of the new Regulation and if appropriate companies should consider appointing a data protection officer or at the very least nominate a responsible person to be the representative. In simple terms GDPR will require organisations to create a register of all the personal information it holds, where it originated from, how it is stored and who it is shared with. It’s all about protecting individual’s personal data which has become increasingly at risk because of the technological changes that have happened in recent years. Penalties for non-compliance will be severe. For example, in cases involving highly important data the fine can be up to 20m euros or 4% of the previous year’s global turnover, whichever is the greater. Of course, dhf will need to ensure that it is fully compliant, and we are currently reviewing our own procedures regarding the data we hold on behalf of members. Also, providing there is sufficient interest from members, we intend to hold a GDPR seminar early in the new year for members to attend free of charge. Earlier this month, leading door manufacturer, Hörmann held a bake sale, not for the glory of star baker, but to raise money for Papworth Hospital Charity and the British Heart Foundation. Ten years ago, Service Credit Controller, Carole Eadie underwent life-changing surgery, as she received a heart transplant. To celebrate the ten-year anniversary of Carole’s operation, Hörmann asked employees to put on an apron and cook up their very own signature bake. While there were no lurking eyes of celebrity chefs, the incentive to fundraise for Papworth Hospital Charity and the British Heart Foundation gave the bakers a push. Commenting on the event, Carole said: “Both charities are very special and I am glad I could use the anniversary of my transplant to raise money and awareness for such an important cause. They have not only saved millions of lives, but they continually provide cardiac care beyond that of the NHS. I was overwhelmed with the support that I received from my colleagues on the day and I would like to thank them for taking the time to bake so many delicious cakes and contributing to such a worthy cause.” Hörmann’s marketing manager, David O’Mara, added: “Carole’s bravery is admirable, and we are incredibly happy to be able to support her, and such vital charities.” Hörmann’s bake sale was a great success in both contributing to the funds of Papworth Hospital Charity and the British Heart Foundation, and raising awareness of cardiac health.
