With home security often being a reactive purchase following an incident, rather than a proactive preventative step, security experts Yale look at how repair and replacement specialists of multi-point locks could be encouraging homeowners to invest in new or upgraded home security measures at this time of year. Keep entry points secure Data from the Office of National Statistics revealed that in the year April 2019 to March 2020, 76 per cent of domestic burglaries in England and Wales were accessed through a door. The research also revealed that in 24 per cent of cases where entry was gained, the door was not locked 1 . These statistics show how homeowners underestimate the importance of sufficient door security and how the industry needs to work together to highlight the effectiveness and benefits of properly securing entry points to the home and providing protection against common methods of attack. Cylinder snapping is a common method of attack, which requires little or no experience. While it is not possible to eradicate crime, there are steps that consumers can take to improve security and protect their homes and possessions, such as replacing door furniture that doesn’t meet the latest standards. In response to these attacks, it’s important to promote cylinders that meet the TS007 Kitemarked standard, which was developed in conjunction with the Door and Hardware Federation. Under the TS007 3 Star system, the cylinder, or a combination of the cylinder and security furniture, must have an accumulative three stars to meet the minimum-security requirements. To achieve the highest TS007 3 Star accreditation the Yale Platinum 3 Star cylinder has been independently tested by the BSI (British Standards Institution) against known cylinder attack methods and meets the SS312 Locksmith standard. The maximum-security Platinum 3 Star cylinder from Yale has been designed to protect homes with five separate lines of defense – Anti-Snap, Anti-Bump, Anti-Pick, Anti-Drill, and Anti-Pull. This allows repair specialists to present customers with an innovative solution that will deter even the most determined intruder. The benefit of the 3-star accreditation means no additional specialist security door furniture is necessary to achieve the highest level, which means any door furniture can be used on the door. The Platinum 3 Star cylinder is Yale’s most secure cylinder yet and the confidence in this lock’s performance means Yale offers a £1,000 guarantee in the unlikely event that the cylinder is snapped under attack due to a forced break-in. Products are required to undergo rigorous testing to achieve the 3-star accreditation. To meet the maximum requirements of TS007, the cylinder or combination of the cylinder and door furniture, must both accumulate to three stars. If a 1-star cylinder is in use, the door handle can be upgraded to be a 2 Star Platinum Security Handle, to ensure a high level of protection against a cylinder manipulation attack and to meet the TS007 standard. Replace with Doormaster If a multi-point lock feels like it is potentially worn, or is over 10 to 15 years old, then it may be a good idea to get it replaced in order to avoid failure. The Yale Doormaster provides the possibility to replace the existing lock without the customer having to get a new door, which can be costly. Yale Doormaster presents a range of replacement multi-point door locks, replacement gearboxes, and ‘overnight’ locks, which enables installers to instantly repair or replace the multi-point locks in virtually all PVCu and the majority of composite and timber doors. The Doormaster PAS3621 from Yale is Maximum Security British Kitemark approved. By fitting this replacement option, it ensures the home security is maintained as the PAS24 accreditation on the existing door set is maintained, providing no additional alterations are made.
