Door Industry Journal - Winter 2020
Also online at: www.dijonline.co.uk 26 THE door industry journal winter 2020 Industry News “There’s a Philosophy for Getting it Right First Time Every Time” Mark Molyneux, Head of Operations at Ellard, looks at the rapid advancements made during 2020 As we enter Q4 of 2020, building on the successes of Ellard’s best sales month in history, COVID restrictions are back in place for the entire UK. Despite this, we are still fully operational and processing orders whilst following strict social distancing measures. Within the operations department we have had a few key changes, I have poached Justin Whittaker from Customer Services who has taken up a new role as Warehouse Manager, his experience, knowledge and work ethic have already seen some positive changes to how we do things in the warehouse with us starting to see some really positive results. We are fully aware we still have areas to improve on, namely picking errors, we are striving for zero mistakes. We have implemented a new checking and signing off procedure for all orders, this enables that extra pair of eyes to look over the order before it’s dispatched. We have been able to do this due to the new order matrix system being put in place to allow additional time for picking, packing and dispatch of all orders. The move to using DPD for some of our smaller consignments has seen a large reduction in the number of issues we have with couriers such as DX. We are still using DX on the larger items as we believe the service they provide on these items is good. H&B remain our favoured pallet delivery supplier and currently operate an exemplary service which we have very little issues with. As we move closer to 2021 and the implementation of the new ERP system we are working towards some exciting changes including the removal of the dot matrix printer, we have had a huge offer from the Antiques Roadshow to take this off our hands. The new system will provide us with a smoother order input to dispatch procedure, it will reduce the amount of paper we use and make delivery notes and invoices much simpler to read. Within Ellard there is a philosophy of getting it right first time every time, this is something we are going to aim for moving forward. We are aiming for zero mistakes and the changes to the team, introduction of new processes and procedures in cohesion with simplified paperwork from the new ERP system we will achieve this aim.
