Door Industry Journal - Winter 2021

THE door industry journal winter 2021 Also online at: www.dijonline.co.uk OPEN DOORS Construction Products-Regulatory Reform is on its way….at last! Since the Grenfell tragedy over 4 years ago, dhf has campaigned tirelessly for a greater regulatory regime for construction products, particularly if they are safety-critical. Sometimes it has felt like ‘pushing water uphill’ but at long last, there are some positive indications that the Department for Levelling -Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC-previously called MHCLG) are moving towards implementing stronger regulatory controls. In a recent meeting held by Construction Products Association, a representative from DLUHC outlined a plan which, amongst other things, included the creation of a statutory list of ‘safety critical’ products (where their failure would risk causing serious injury or death) and bring the regulation of these products in line with those subject to a designated standard under the existing regime. The plan cannot legally be implemented until the Building Safety Bill becomes law – probably late next year – and is unlikely to progress significantly until DLUHC has dealt with the end of recognition of CE marking in GB (31 December 2022). However, the plan is a major step in the right direction. The main question to be considered by dhf is the ‘wish list’ of ‘safety critical’ products that are not already the subject of a designated standard. dhf will consult its members of the relevant groups, particularly the Building Hardware Group and the Doorset Groups, before lobbying DLUHC on this issue. dhf has a particular interest in internal fire- resisting doorsets (see the feature on page 112). Clearly, this is a safety-critical product and will be, no doubt, number one on our list to be submitted to DLUHC. They managed to raise over £1000 for Hope House children’s hospice, which provides invaluable work in the local area. Alan Lewis, the event organiser, said: “It’s great to see a mix of abilities, from first-timers to experienced marathon runners, all on board to support this worthy cause.” All 15 runners managed to complete the race in commendable times.
