Jewers were originally invited to tender for the design, manufacture and installation of these gates by BBMV (Balfour Beatty and Morgan Sindall JV) in 2016, and the award of the Whitechapel contract completed a trio of Crossrail projects awarded to Jewers; the other two stations being Bond Street and Paddington. Whitechapel Station reopened in August. The Whitechapel gates are each configured in three folding leaves and are manufactured from bespoke anodised aluminium extrusions with a stainless-steel core. The construction was ultimately tested to an SR3 security rating. The leading-edge leaves are infilled with brass clad stainless steel to provide additional security around the high-security locking system, but also for architectural intent. When the gates are open, each pair of bi-folding leaves fold into a purpose-designed enclosure cabinet within either side of the centre column between the two gates, then the brass clad hinged leaves close the cabinet to provide a flush and seamless column showing no indication of the gates. The architectural finish of these gates was designed very much to fit in with the surrounding façade of the newly renovated Victorian station, and certainly look the part. Jewers were successful in winning this order as they had previously supplied an Osprey door on an adjacent hangar in 2018 and as the client (Elstree Aerodrome) was very happy with the first door supplied, they specified a Jewers Door for their new hangar. The new door was manufactured for an opening just under 26 metres wide by 5.2 metres high. The door is manually operated, comprising 30 leaves with 5 bunches of 6 leaves fully floating, folding with 2 or 3 bunches to each side. The leaves fold and bunch beyond the clear opening and the bunching space required beyond each jamb is approx. 1600 mm. Panel width is 845 mm. There are vision panels in each door leaf that are 430 mm x 770 mm in size and the door has a heavy-duty top track system instead of the standard Osprey ‘C’ track, this was needed due to the size of the door.
