Also online at: www.dijonline.co.uk 24 THE door industry journal winter 2022 Industry News Use of Secured by Design (SBD) Trademarks by Non-Member Companies Secured by Design (SBD) is one of a group of initiatives that is run by Police Crime Prevention Initiatives (Police CPI) with the aim of creating safer spaces, buildings and communities, thus reducing crime and helping people live more safely. SBD seeks to improve the security of buildings and their immediate surroundings by working closely with builders, developers, local authorities and registered housing associations to incorporate its police crime prevention standards into developments from initial concept and design, through to construction and completion. Police forces throughout the UK have specially trained Designing Out Crime Officers (DOCOs) who offer police designing out crime and SBD advice free of charge. SBD’s product based accreditation scheme – the Police Preferred Specification - provides a recognised standard for all security products that can deter and reduce crime. There are many hundreds of companies who produce over 7000 attack resistant crime prevention products that have met the exacting Police Preferred Specification. This includes high-specification security doors that have surpassed the most rigorous security testing and products that embrace the latest technology to ensure safe access control to buildings and businesses. In 2022 SBD introduced The Secure Connected Device accreditation scheme in-line with government legislation. This is to enable companies providing IoT connected products and services to demonstrate that their products have achieved the appropriate IoT standards and certification, providing customers with security assurance. SBD continually monitor national crime trends to keep pace with changing patterns of criminal behaviour, advances in building design and new technology. The Secured by Design logos Secured by Design members are authorised to use the logos and trademarks associated with the Scheme. There are four different logos for Member Companies to use. • The Police Preferred Specification (PPS): this logo is used on a product or packaging of a specific product. It can also be used to identify a product that is accredited in a catalogue, leaflet, or on a website • The Official Police Security Initiative (OPSI): this logo is used to promote an organisation’s membership of the Secured by Design scheme. It can be used in press adverts, marketing materials or on websites. It can also be used on material that promotes the company itself rather than specific products. • The Secured Connected Device (SCD) accreditation: this logo is used on a product or packaging of a specific product which has achieved the SCD accreditation in respect of their Internet of Things (IoT) security. It can also be used to identify a product that is accredited in a catalogue, leaflet, or on a website • Product Engraving logo: this logo may be engraved or stamped onto a product. It is specifically intended for use on metal products, which must, of course, have been awarded Secured by Design accreditation Use of Secured by Design logos by Non-Member Companies Although no Member Company may sub-licence any of the Secured by Design trademarks, distributors, retailers and resellers of products that are not accredited under the Secured by Design scheme can reference a current Member Company’s membership but need to clearly identify the SBD accredited Member Company for proper usage. Simply, this means non-members must include the actual member’s name, member’s logo and product reference in their collateral. The use of the SBD logos by non-members is limited to the ‘Police Preferred Specification’ or ‘Secure Connected Device’ version and is strictly bound by the conditions of use outlined below: • The Member logo must be displayed and the accredited product name must be referenced in full • The SBD logo must be equal or smaller in size than that of the SBD accredited member company • The Secured by Design logo must be visually and contextually clearly linked to the member organisation (i.e. member logos and SBD logos must appear in the same text boxes, be placed on the same background) • Written consent must be obtained from the member company to use the Secured by Design logos/trademarks Any non-member company displaying the Secured by Design logo or associated trademarks (without clearly identifying an accredited Secured by Design supplier company and product they relate to) could be subject to legal action. To advertise as a Secured by Design accredited company, when a company is not, is an offence under the Trade Marks Act 1994, Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008 and Business Protection from Misleading Marketing Regulations 2008.
