Art in Manufacturing: SWS UK Welcomes ‘Wave Sweeper’ onto Site Thanks to a rich heritage in British manufacturing, SWS UK was lucky enough to be chosen for this year’s Art in Manufacturing, art commissioning program. The program provides artists with a unique platform to make new work in and alongside some of the UK’s major manufacturers. SWS UK was paired with renowned artist SAPIEN who undertook a four-month residency at the company’s head office earlier in the year. SAPIEN is the alias and studio name of artist and sculptor Steve Anwar, a maker of solid steel sculptures inspired by ethereal weightlessness. Taking inspiration from SWS UK’s unique rural setting and its range of industrial roller shutters, SAPIEN created a striking new sculpture named Wave Sweeper. The sculpture was first unveiled at the National Festival of Making where it was displayed and admired by both national and international artists at the family event held in July across Blackburn town centre. Wave Sweeper has since returned to SWS UK where it will be permanently displayed in “its new prestigious location at the site entrance. “Art in Manufacturing has been an exciting project for SWS and something totally different from what we produce day-to-day. Our production team has loved collaborating with Steven Anwar and helping his artistic process come to fruition.” – Chloe Wiggins, Marketing Manager Duncan Maffey Justin Mercer Will Elder
